I think you need more than 4 MB to install Linux (or FreeBSD). Maybe FreeBSD ist an option for you, on my 8MB 486 it runs faster than Linux. It should be possible to use your machine for this. I think a 486 machine with 8 MB and a 200 MB harddisk would be better.
