In my case, the problem was with the video hardware cursor (thanks for the idea D'jinnie). I am using the svga Xserver with a Cirrus Logic GD5430 PCI video card. Using the "sw_cursor" option in the Device section (for the Cirrus Logic) of the XF86Config file solved the problem.
