Thanks, looks like I goofed. I was sure I had not done this the right way but had a lot of dificulty finding what was happening. There seem to be so many files used in the startup of X. I guess that if I get dselect to re-install the base X package I can get the correct X file back? That README.Debian is bery useful - I wish I had found it sooner. Thanks Dave
