The solution to this would be to run something like 'xsetroot' or 'xsetbg' after login (see the respective man-pages). This could be run, depending on your personal preferences, in /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup_0 (which is normally run, if you're using xdm, after you successfully login, whichever user you are), or alternatively in ~/.xsession (which is your personal set of start-up commands).
