hmm, this is the third time i've tried to send this. Even my bcc: didn't show up last time . . .
I have a second IP adress on the same subnet as my desktop, which I've given to my laptop. To dial in, the laptop needs to navigate the modem pool, log in to the network, and only then can it reach my machine. I've been having problems; the closest I've gotten has PAP attempting to connect, but failing: Aug 27 01:32:29 eyry pppd[2280]: pppd 2.3.5 started by hawkppp, uid 1005 Aug 27 01:32:29 eyry pppd[2280]: Using interface ppp0 Aug 27 01:32:29 eyry pppd[2280]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyp1 Aug 27 01:32:35 eyry pppd[2280]: PAP authentication failure for hawkppp Aug 27 01:32:35 eyry pppd[2280]: Connection terminated. Aug 27 01:32:36 eyry pppd[2280]: Exit. The other machine (which isn't with me) notes the password which it is sending, which is correct. What I didn't do is to configure the laptop's networking any differently than my desktop. On reflection, I suspect this is the problem. It certainly doesn't have direct access to the router . . . So what do I need to put where to direct the laptop to go through the other machine? do i just label the other as the router? And do i need to do anything to the desktop so that it will know to catch&forward packets? rick -- These opinions will not be those of ISU until it pays my retainer.
