Here's how I do it. mke2fs /dev/[newdevice] mount /dev/[newdevice] /mnt cd [root of old fs] find . -xdev | cpio -padm /mnt Now change /etc/fstab to reflect the changes, and reboot. I use cpio because it copies device files correctly, preserves permissions properly, and doesn't do weird things that I don't expect. You do have to complete this step for each filesystem you wish to move.
