I've found a work-around solution to my problems with startx that I posted last night. For those who didn't see it, if I executed startx more than once, my machine would lock up solid.
The solution? I enabled xdm at boot, and now that I'm learning how to use .xsession I can do what I want. Thanks to the Debian X maintainers!
