I'm transferring an existing Debian installation from an small disk to a new big one. I used tar to move all the files over. For the most part all the permissions and other attributes were preserved, but a few were not. Most notably all sockets were made into pipes in /dev and in /var/run. Does this matter ? If so, any ideas how to change them back to srwxrwxrwx ?
