If you are using X and want to use a currently running emacs to compose messages, look into the gnuserv package of emacs. IIRC, it is as simple as adding (gnuserv-start) to your ~/.emacs and using gnuclient as the command to start your editor. (As set in the elm options menu.) I'd double check that though...
