If you're running X, the XKEYBOARD server extension in XFree86 should allow you to do this. Inside of Section "Keyboard" you can try the line:
XkbKeymap "xfree86(pt)" And make sure you don't disable the extension by having the line XkbDisable In this section. Once you're inside X you can print the keyboard's layout with 'xkbprint :0' or just generate a postscript file you can view with 'xkbprint :0 layout.ps'.
