The manufacturer isn't very important. Instead focus on the model of the main chip on the NIC. Those model designators will correspond to drivers in the kernel. I have two "tulip" (they happen to be LinkSys LNE100TX) cards in this machine, a RTL8139 (D-Link 690?, PCMCIA) in another and two NE2000 clones (Netgear FA201?, ISA) cards in another. I've also seen a few 3Com cards used (both PCMCIA and PCI (or was it ISA?), the 3c59x driver). I favor the Linksys/DLink/Netgear cards because they are quite a bit cheaper than 3Com. Both are fully functional. HTH, -D -- If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. I John 1:8 http://dman.ddts.net/~dman/
