The manufacturer isn't very important.  Instead focus on the model of
the main chip on the NIC.  Those model designators will correspond to
drivers in the kernel.  I have two "tulip" (they happen to be LinkSys
LNE100TX) cards in this machine, a RTL8139 (D-Link 690?, PCMCIA) in
another and two NE2000 clones (Netgear FA201?, ISA) cards in another.
I've also seen a few 3Com cards used (both PCMCIA and PCI (or was it
ISA?), the 3c59x driver).  I favor the Linksys/DLink/Netgear cards
because they are quite a bit cheaper than 3Com.  Both are fully
functional.
