It does matter, but my guess would be that you're using the TM MIME
package. If so, you can toggle this behavior with the "MIME-Edit" menu 
item "About Split", or with the key sequence "C-c C-x /".

Also, as I believe David pointed out, you can disable it completely by
editing your ~/.emacs file and adding:

(setq mime-editor/split-message nil)
