(1) Check your /etc/ppp/peers/provider file for this line: connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/chatscripts/provider"
Make sure to put the -v in there if it is not there. (2) After you run pon and it fails, examine the /var/log/syslog file. At the end of it you should see a record of the chat with your ISP.
