Yes it is a pain in that situation. 
There may be some relief depending on which application(s) you're pasting into. Some 
applications support emacs-style editing in input fields (Ctrl-K or Ctrl-U depending 
on cursor position), or with a context menu (button 3, Clear, then paste with button 
2). My favourite is Opera's Ctrl+button 2 to clear and paste in one operation.
