I double checked it and it is mode 600 root.root. Will pppd give a authentication failure if the networking settings aren't configured correctly? I"m trying to do this using ipmasq.. the net-3 howto isn't very detailed, but it does give an example of what I'm trying to do -- lacking all the pppd and hosts/DNS files... :(
