Until the modularized sound drivers are deployed with Debian there's little point in providing sound pre-compiled; it would match exactly one configuration of one sound card. Red Hat have modularized drivers with 5.0, but from what I could see of their sound configuration tool (which supports only the PnP SB), their modularization patches are different to the ones used in Linux 2.1.
