Gnome is a desktop environment. It is not a window manager. KDE is not one either. It includes kwm -- that is the window manager. These two projects are about a unified look and feel, as well as a programming standard to help coders. gnome does not have any one particular window manager attached to it. The intent is to eventually put gnome-compliance into the existing window managers. Jim Pick will be releasing gnome .13 sometime next week. It is for Hamm, not bo. Check it out. But do realize that gnome is about 6 months younger than KDE and so is not as robust or mature.
