Actually, you get SIGHUP _because_ the modem hung up.  But that's not
actually related to the problem.

All that "Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1" means is that chat exited
normally.  At this stage you need to be talking to the ISP's PPP
server.

If you have "debug" set in /etc/ppp.options_out (or
/etc/ppp/peers/provider for hamm) you can look in /var/log/syslog
and/or /var/log/messages and/or /var/log/ppp.log to see what pppd did
when it tried to connect.
