Well, isn't this a classic example of a bad floppy disk? I agree that the "Cannot allocate memory" error looks somewhat strange, but it _could_ be memory on the floppydisk? Anyway, I'd go for another floppy disk. (Note that I don't trust the Linux floppy disk driver very much, it seems to create more errors (read and write) than the DOS one.
