I have an stylus 600 and had the same result as you when trying the stcolor driver. Install the gs-aladdin package (filename for libc5 version is gs-aladdin_5.03-0.99_i386.deb, I found it somewhere on an italian server) and call gs like: gs @stc500p.upp ... The stc500p.upp response file will select the uniprint driver with the correct options. There is also an stc500ph.upp file. Please read the devices.txt file in /usr/doc/gs for more information.
