I have GPM set up like so:
/etc/gpm.conf:
device=/dev/psaux
responsiveness=
type=ps2
append="-R"
And X like so:
/etc/X11/XF86Config:
Section "Pointer"
Protocol "MouseSystems"
Device "/dev/gpmdata"
So that X will read the mouse data that GPM leaves in a fifo /dev/gpmdata.
