Easy to fix. Edit /etc/X11/XF86Config... Go to "Section Screen" portion of the file and find the description matching your equipment. Add the following line: DefaultColorDepth 16 The new line will force a startup in 16 bit (65536 colors). You may want to re-arrange the "Modes" line to put the most used resolution up front.
