Perhaps this will lead you in the right direction, Bruce recently posted: I run /dev on a ram disk, and disable cron when undocked. That seems to be enough to get the disk to spin down, regardless of the time period of update. I think the system spent a lot of time updating the dates of tty files in /dev.
