Last spring when I was looking for a summer job, I received a call from one place that I applied. It was basically a surprise interview. After talking for a minute, the interviewer asked how much unix experience I had. I mentioned that I ran linux. He sounded impressed, didn't have many other questions, and a few days latter I was sent a letter of acceptance. When talking to my mentor (the interviewer) later, he said linux was the major deciding factor between me and another candidate.
