In chapter 5, on X11 installation, page 136 gives a list of available window manager for 1.3 along with some explanation on installation. When you install a new window manager package it will ask you if you wish this window manager to be the default. If you say yes it will add that WM to the top of the list in /etc/X11/window-managers. If you start your server with xdm, that is the window manager that will come up.
