when I installed netatalk, I was unable to login too. I deleted one line from the /etc/pam.d/netatalk file, my present file shows the following lines:
auth required /usr/lib/security/pam_unix_auth.so account required /usr/lib/security/pam_unix_acct.so session required /usr/lib/security/pam_unix_session.so After reboot I could login via netatalk. I deleted the line because I has a redhat box running with netatalk and pam and the only difference was one line more in the debian box.
