sounds like you have a lot of init scripts... try going to
/etc/init.d/rc2.d and giving a list of the contents... you may want to
try to do an #apt-get update && apt-get upgrade     
i say this because maybe some components of packages got deleted one
time when you fsck'd and now the init scripts are trying to start
programs that can no longer function.
