I've managed to muddle through the Debian Linux installation and get X
Windows installed. However, I've been unable to make use of my 21"
monitor.
The screen appears stuck on a 800x600 resolution. I've looked at the
manual
at http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/users-guide/users-guide.en.pdf
(13.5.3
Configuring a Monitor From the Desktop) but the instructions didn't appear
to apply to my system...
1. Select Systems > X Configuration from the gnome Control Center.
[Note]
If you are using the kde desktop, type /usr/bin/ xserver-configlet-capplet
at a command
line.
There was no 'Systems' option on the left hand panel of Gnome Control Center
(was I looking in the wrong place?). So I tried logging out and back into
KDE and couldn't find the xserver-configlet-capplet file in the desired
directory, or anywhere else for that matter!
It's highly possible that I didn't install things perfectly, but all looks
well besdes the screen resolution.
BTW - I've messed around with my XF86Config-4 file in /etc/X11. I changed
the screen section as follows...
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device
"Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultColorDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024*768"
EndSubSection
EndSection
This was taken from a variety of sources. I was having trouble during
installation as I was unsure of the model of my biostar video card. I had
hoped that Xconfigurator would be my saviour but that appears to be reserved
for RedHat. At least apt-get install Xconfigurator didn't get me
anywhere.
Any help would be appreciated as my system is barely usable in this state...
