There are extensive how-to's at www.linux.org, one of which explains upgrading and installing a new kernel. As for your sound card, the setup is less than straightforward. There is a very good FAQ at http://homepage.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/Marcus.Brinkmann/soundblaster.html which explains the setup for that.
