The SCHEME variable is set in the get_info function in the
/etc/pcmcia/shared file:

get_info ()
{
    if [ -s /var/run/pcmcia-scheme ] ; then
        SCHEME=`cat /var/run/pcmcia-scheme`
    else
        SCHEME="default"
    fi

    grep_stab $1 < /var/run/stab || usage
}

This function is called in the other files, like for example
/etc/pcmcia/network.
