As Homer Simpson would say, Dooh!. It turned out that somehow I managed to change my .ICEauthority file ownership to root:root.
Once I used a non-graphical login it was easy to spot. I also noticed that Windowmaker gave the same "security violations" in logcheck. Sorry for the wasted bandwidth.
