The behaviour you see is very basic to unix, and I'd be very surprised to
suddenly see it go away. The only reason for this would be that
minicom is constantly closing and opening the file you're downloading,
but that seems a rather strange thing to do.
It must be something minicom related, as I can certainly move (or even
remove[1]) files in Debian without the data being lost, when using
slrn (newsreader), or ftp.
But without real proof of your observation (I don't use minicom myself,
so I'll never get that), I would say: are you sure the problem is in
Debian? Couldn't it be that for another reason the file stopped growing
(like a network problem)?
[1] For removed files, retrieving the data is somewhat harder, but
/proc/PID/fd/5 or somethign will ofthen contain the data from
the file you deleted.
