It looks like Michael is absolutely correct about this. I too had a problem loading it and although I had emu10k1 already loaded, I wasn't added to the 'audio' group. Make sure to do that and restart.

It's quite simple, as far as soundcards go. Try the following:

modprobe emu10k1

Check the last lines of "dmesg" to see if it was recognized, and then add
yourself to the "audio" group.

ie. adduser <me> audio

Logout and back in, and try an audio app.
