That's why it would be nicer to user grub (instead of lilo). You need to
install it once. When you have a new kernel to boot to, you only need to
define the entry in the /boot/grub/menu.lst; meaning: the MBR needs to be
touched once; when the first setup. You can get into grub's command line
too; there's no need to edit the menu.lst file if all you need is to test
the new kernel (assuming you remember the name, of course; because you
have to type it down).

BTW, if you have evms installed, well, no evms on the boot partition;
grub doesn't understand evms yet. (Hello, Grub developers! You've been
busy lately?)
