1. Look at /var/log/xdm-errors for possible explanations.

2. If you power down your machine abnormally, xdm leaves /tmp/.X0-lock
lying around, which prevents it from coming up again.  Stock Debian
wipes /tmp on bootup, but some people comment that out.
