what i did that finally worked was to choose the "monitor can do
1280x1024 @60hz" option; this worked where entering my own specifics
failed.  Also, i used XF86Setup, which ultimately gave me the best
results.

Then, however, i had to edit out an aweful lot of extra modes . . .

yes, i saw this with some cases in which i still ended up with a useless
configureation file.
