Well we are going to need more information than "didn't work...something
wrong" in order to be of any assistance.

When you select xbase, dselect suggests several packages to satisfy the
dependencies. I assume that you accepted these additions with enter and
then went to install. Did the install happen without errors? Where did it
stop and what were the error messages? If it installed but you can't start
X it is probably because you are not finished with the configuration.

Since you have tried several "false starts" already I would suggest that
before you do anything else you undo all that you have done so far. With
dselect, go to the selection screen and move the cursor to each of the
xserver packages that you attempted to install. Press '_' (that is a
shifted dash/minus) this will mark the package for purge and will remove
all config files for that package (this is what you want to happen at this
point). Mark all the xserver packages that you attempted to install as
well as xbase and its dependencies. You will need to mark the packages
presented in the dependency screen with an '_' as well to get them
completely purged. Once all such x packages are so marked, go back to the
main menu and choose the [R]emove option on the menu. When the smoke
clears, go back, select xbase and its dependencies, then add your
xservers. I also suggest that you include all of the xfnt packages (this
will avoid problems with future package installations).
Once you have everything chosen go to the [I]nstall phase. You will be
asked several questions during the install phase. To the question about
whther you wish to start xdm at boot time answer no even if that is what
you eventually want. (you can configure it once it is working) At some
point you will be asked if you wish the vga16 server to be the default.
You should answer yes here even though you want another server to be the
default. This is the only way that the XFree86 config program will start
up. This will let you configure the mouse, the graphics card, the monitor,
and some miscelaneous stuff. Once you exit the config phase you will be
asked about the other server that you installed and can make it the
default at this time. This should bring you to the point you can exit
dselect and start up x with an xdm command from the root prompt.

Hope this helps,

Dwarf
