I don't know if this is an option for you but I installed sendmail instead of smail for my debian system and have not regretted that decision.
Personally I think sendmail is better. my two cents. -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
