Forcing X to reread config file safely?

Hi!

I'm currently trying to set the best settings for my X-Display. After
changing
    /etc/X11/XF86Config
I used to do a
    /etc/init.d/xdm stop
followed by
    /etc/init.d/xdm start

Using this method gets me a locked machine sometimes (Can't type
anything in the tty or switch ttys). So I suspect, that this ain't the
right way.

Is sending the XServer a SIGHUP the recommended way, or pressing
CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE or something else?
