A possible cause of this would be similar to the ppp setup where ip-up and ip-down scripts are invoked. Sometimes the scripts get "customized" by hard coding a device name in place of a passed argument. I have seen countless examples suggested along the lines of:
(startup script) export PPPDEV=/dev/foo (shutdown script) somecommand $PPPDEV maybe using a grep-type of tool in /etc and parts of /usr will help you find remaining /dev/cu* references.
