Have you tried disabling the framebuffer?  I know that some of them
(rivafb comes to mind) are horribly broken and do not work with X.

You're not actually using the ssh2 package are you?  Switch to OpenSSH
(package ssh) for a start.  Are you sure that each is using the same
protocols and support common ciphers and such?  Enable some verbosity in
your ssh client and see what comes up.  Have you generated keys for both
SSH1 and SSH2 on your woody box?  This tripped me up once while I was
stuck using an old, old version of OpenSSH on solaris to SSH back into
my woody machine...
