The file /etc/host.conf tells the hostname resolution system where to look for hosts. It will have a line "order xxxxx[, yyyyy]..." which on my system is "order hosts, bind". If "bind" is not present then DNS servers will not be consulted to resolve hostnames. -- Jens B.
