you can try dpkg --force-depends <package.file.deb>

I get this crap all the time. I either link the files to something
in my path or link a newer library to a name of an older library
it is looking for. works for me.

That should kick it in. I never was able to get 1.1 to boot, until
I compiled the kernel. Custom configured kernels work better
anyways, :)
Also, if you do any modules, the wrong setting might be in your
etc/modules file, and you should go in and comment out the crap
and uncomment auto.
This all worked for 1.1 I haven't got 1.2 yet, but I did get
the new base, libraries and X11, then I recompiled 2.0.27 source.

compile xemacs from the source. That's what I did. easy and fun too!!!
