A long shot, but: Assuming that you're running a depth (8, 16, 24 or 32bit) that has more than one resolution defined, it could be that all but one of the resolutions are being rejected at startup time. Have a look at the messages that print in the console. If you use xdm (I don't), I don't know if you get to see these messages or not.
