Here is what I did: install the windowmaker packages (in dselect search for wmaker or simply wm for the applications) install wdm dpkg-reconfigure wdm (should be done already with 'install wdm' in dselect) update-rc.d -f xdm remove After restarting your x-session choose wmaker in wdm's 'Start WM'.
