I'd suggest 'import' from imagemagick:

   while import -window root screenshot.$( date +'%Y-%m-%d.%H%M%S).png;
   do sleep 1; 
   done

Though that's not quite realtime capture.  I'd think a hardware device is
what you'd need for what you're describing, Martin.
