When I did this I used a Logitech USB / Optical Wheel Mouse.
Took the little fellow downstairs and changed the mouse to a Logitech
two button serial mouse, D-shaped 9 pin.
Been running:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 to no avail. Cannot get X to start again.
Check log file /var/log/XFree86.0.log to sure the mouse is
your only problem, then edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and
replace the USB mouse device (probably /dev/input/mice)
with /dev/ttyS0 or whichever serial port you plugged into,
and change the protocol to MouseMan if necessary.
