Did you try logging into a terminal via Ctrl-Alt-F2? If not, try to do so.

After logging in, run "df -h" to see how much free space is left on each
of your mounted partitions.

Try killing gdm with "/etc/init.d/gdm stop"; then try logging into X
manually with "startx".

Report the results.
