I was having a lot of trouble with my cd burner (on an HP Pavilion ze4610us) after upgrading to a 2.6.10 kernel from 2.4.27, where it had worked flawlessly as ide-scsi.
The solution for me was really simple - modprobe sg Apparently even with ide-cd it needs scsi generic to be loaded It still occasionally fails if I don't run k3b as root/sudo, but works fine with xcdroast.
