~postgres/.bash_profile should contain:

    . /etc/postgresql/postmaster.conf
    PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/lib/postgresql/bin
    PGDATA=${POSTGRES_DATA:-/var/lib/postgres/data}
    PGLIB=/usr/lib/postgresql/lib
    export PGLIB PGDATA
